U.S.-China-Venezuela

The United States military has seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela that was transporting approximately two million barrels of crude oil owned by a Chinese company, according to officials familiar with the operation.

The interdiction marks the third oil tanker seized by U.S. authorities in recent months amid heightened enforcement of sanctions targeting Venezuela’s energy exports.

The vessel was intercepted in international waters near Venezuela’s coastline during what U.S. officials described as a routine maritime monitoring operation.

Preliminary assessments indicate the tanker was carrying Venezuelan-origin crude allegedly sold in violation of U.S. sanctions.

The oil cargo is believed to be owned by a Chinese firm that had contracted the shipment through intermediaries, a practice U.S. authorities say is increasingly used to obscure the origin and ownership of sanctioned shipments.

U.S. officials said the seizure is part of a broader campaign to disrupt illicit oil trade networks that generate revenue for the Venezuelan government.

Washington has long accused Caracas of using opaque shipping practices including ship-to-ship transfers, falsified documentation, and disabled transponders to evade sanctions.

The Pentagon and the Treasury Department are expected to coordinate the disposition of the seized cargo, which in previous cases has involved legal proceedings and potential sale of the oil under U.S. court supervision.

Neither the Chinese company linked to the cargo nor Chinese government officials have publicly commented on the seizure. In past incidents, Beijing has criticized unilateral sanctions and has called for disputes to be resolved through diplomatic and legal channels. Venezuelan officials have also condemned similar actions, labeling them as acts of “maritime piracy” and violations of international law.

The incident underscores escalating tensions surrounding global energy flows, particularly as major powers seek to enforce sanctions while maintaining access to critical oil supplies.

U.S. authorities indicated that investigations into the tanker’s ownership structure, financing, and shipping route are ongoing, and additional enforcement actions could follow as the probe expands.
