The United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany and Italy have issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, warning of the potentially severe humanitarian consequences of further military action.
In the statement, the five countries called on Israel to avoid launching a ground offensive in Lebanon, cautioning that such a move could lead to a prolonged conflict and widespread civilian suffering. They urged both Israeli and Lebanese representatives to engage in meaningful negotiations aimed at achieving a sustainable political solution.
The leaders strongly backed diplomatic initiatives to facilitate talks and called for immediate de-escalation. They also condemned Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel, particularly those targeting civilians, and demanded that the group cease hostilities and disarm.
The statement further criticised Hezbollah’s involvement alongside Iran in the conflict, warning that this alignment risks undermining regional peace and stability. It also condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure, healthcare workers and facilities, as well as incidents involving the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.
Emphasising the importance of international humanitarian law, the countries called on all parties to adhere to their legal obligations. They highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation in Lebanon, noting the scale of displacement and the growing strain on civilians.
Reiterating support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, the group called for its full implementation. They also expressed support for the Lebanese government’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah and curb its military activities.
The statement concluded with a message of solidarity with the Lebanese people, acknowledging that they have been drawn into the conflict against their will.
