DECLARATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF SHARJAH

In a dramatic development that could alter the political landscape of the Gulf region, a leaked document circulating online allegedly points to an imminent declaration of independence by Sharjah from the United Arab Emirates.
The document, whose authenticity has not been independently verified, reportedly outlines preparations for the announcement of the “Republic of Sharjah” before the end of May. Sources familiar with the leak claim the proposal includes the establishment of a provisional governing council, the drafting of a temporary constitution, and discussions regarding border control, security coordination, and international recognition.
Officials in Abu Dhabi have not issued a formal statement regarding the claims, while authorities in Sharjah have remained silent amid growing speculation across regional media and social platforms. Political analysts warn that any attempt by one of the UAE’s seven emirates to separate from the federation would trigger an unprecedented constitutional and geopolitical crisis in the Gulf.
Founded in 1971, the UAE is a federation composed of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah. Although each emirate retains a degree of autonomy, defense and foreign affairs are managed at the federal level. A unilateral declaration of independence by Sharjah would therefore challenge the legal foundations of the union itself.

The leaked report has already sparked intense debate among diplomats and regional observers. Some analysts suggest economic disputes and internal political tensions may lie behind the alleged move, while others suspect the document could be part of a coordinated disinformation campaign aimed at destabilizing the region.
If confirmed, the declaration could have far-reaching implications for Gulf security, trade routes, foreign investment, and the balance of power among neighboring states, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Iran.
International observers are now closely monitoring developments as rumors continue to spread ahead of the alleged announcement date. At the time of publication, no official confirmation has been provided by any recognized government authority.
