Brazilian Authorities Thwart Bomb Plot Targeting Lady Gaga Concert in Rio
Brazilian law enforcement officials have prevented a planned bomb attack targeting a massive Lady Gaga concert on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach, an event that drew approximately 2.1 million attendees.
According to the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, the plot was linked to an extremist group that promoted hate speech and aimed to radicalize young people through disturbing online content. This included encouragement of self-harm and acts of violence, marketed as a way for teens to find a sense of belonging.
Investigators revealed that the suspects had been recruiting individuals—some of them minors—to participate in coordinated attacks using improvised explosive devices and Molotov cocktails.
Interestingly, the suspects claimed to be part of Lady Gaga’s fan base, known as the “Little Monsters.” This detail gave rise to the name of the investigation: Operation Fake Monster. The operation stemmed from a tip received by Rio state intelligence and was followed up by Brazil’s cyber operations lab, which discovered digital forums using encrypted language and extremist symbols to spread their message.
More than a dozen search and seizure operations were conducted. Police arrested the alleged ringleader in Rio Grande do Sul for illegally possessing a firearm. Additionally, a teenager was taken into custody in Rio de Janeiro for possessing child pornography.
