King Charles and Queen Camilla Lead Royal Family in Commemorating VE Day Anniversary
King Charles and Queen Camilla took center stage on May 5 as the British royal family began marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
The monarch, 76, and Queen Camilla, 77, made their first official appearance for the occasion at the Queen Victoria Memorial outside Buckingham Palace in London. Victory in Europe Day, or VE Day, commemorates the Allied victory and the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945.
Joined by other senior royals, the King and Queen appeared in step as they honored the milestone. Among those in attendance were Prince William and Kate Middleton, along with Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh; Princess Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence; and Prince Edward, Duke of Kent.
In a notable surprise, Prince William and Princess Kate brought their children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — making it a rare public appearance for the young royals.
The royal family was joined by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and veterans from the Royal British Legion, the U.K.’s largest charity supporting armed forces personnel and veterans.
