British Airways Fined £3.2 Million After Serious Injuries to Staff at Heathrow
May 15, 2025 – London
British Airways has been hit with a fine exceeding £3.2 million following an investigation into two separate incidents where ground crew members suffered serious injuries while working at Heathrow Airport.
The cases, which involved luggage handlers falling from equipment during routine operations, raised concerns about safety practices and risk management within one of the UK’s busiest airline hubs. Both employees sustained long-term injuries, prompting a detailed review by health and safety regulators.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) determined that British Airways had failed to provide adequate training and safety measures, which directly contributed to the accidents. In court, the airline admitted to breaching workplace safety laws.
“This fine reflects the severity of the failures and the impact on the individuals involved,” said an HSE spokesperson. “Employers must ensure that their staff can carry out duties without unnecessary risk.”
British Airways stated it has since taken steps to improve safety protocols and provide additional training to all ground personnel.
The incidents have sparked broader conversations within the aviation industry about ground crew welfare and the importance of preventative safety systems in high-pressure environments.
