How will Syria develop?

1. The Economy Will Not Flourish Without Political Stability

The biggest obstacle to development in Syria is the ongoing political uncertainty. While the north, south, east and west of the country are divided into different control structures, it is impossible to carry out a central development plan. The first step towards development can be possible with a national reconciliation process that will include internal and external actors. At the end of this process, an inclusive and pluralistic governance model that derives its legitimacy from the people should be formed in Syria.

2. Reconstruction of infrastructure

The infrastructures destroyed in the war (infrastructures, electricity, water, roads, hospitals, schools) are the vascular system of a country. It is a dream for these systems to get back on their feet without the establishment of an internationally supported, auditable and transparent reconstruction fund. The technical and financial contributions of actors such as the United Nations, the Arab League and the European Union will be decisive in this process.

3. Economic model: Local development based on agriculture and industry

Syria has fertile plains for agriculture, rich mineral deposits and a young population. However, these resources have been wasted with the war. An economic model that prioritizes local production and reduces dependence on imports is essential for development. People’s participation in production should be encouraged through agricultural cooperatives, local industrial zones and micro-credits.

4. Syrian diaspora: Source of brainpower and investment

Today, millions of Syrians live all over the world and there are doctors, engineers, academics and business people among them. This diaspora can be considered both a financial resource and a qualified workforce for the development of Syria. A safe environment and attractive incentives should be provided for their return.

5. Education and social repair

War destroys not only buildings, but also souls.

Trauma-focused education, vocational programs for young people and peacebuilding projects in which women play an active role should be supported for social repair. Development should include not only economic but also cultural and social recovery.

6. Regional cooperation and trade

Syria’s development cannot be achieved in isolation. The reopening of trade routes with neighbors such as Turkey, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon, customs cooperation and energy projects are of great importance.

In addition, attracting international investments in infrastructure and transportation will accelerate the country’s economic recovery. At this point, the contributions of both Western development agencies and regional cooperation mechanisms will play a critical role.

Conclusion

Syria can develop again, but this is not only possible by erecting buildings, but also by getting society back on its feet. The Syrian people are tired but not discouraged.

In order to build a peaceful, hopeful future where the rule of law prevails, it is enough to show will at the national and international level. A country develops as much as it believes in the future of its children. And Syria still has faith.
