London Congestion Charge Could Rise to £18 a Day from 2026

London, May 27, 2025 — Drivers in the capital could soon face higher costs as Transport for London (TfL) launches a public consultation on proposals to increase the daily congestion charge from £15 to £18 starting January 2026.

The proposed 20% rise—first since 2021—aims to curb traffic and reduce pollution, with City Hall warning that freezing the fee could lead to 2,200 more vehicles entering central London every weekday next year.

When combined with the £12.50 daily Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) fee, drivers of older, non-compliant vehicles could be paying up to £30.50 per day.

TfL argues that the increase remains below the cumulative inflation rate since the last hike and is necessary to manage congestion and emissions in the capital.

A second key proposal includes a new cleaner vehicle discount:

  • 50% off for electric vans, HGVs, and quadricycles using Auto Pay

  • 25% off for electric cars also using Auto Pay

Public feedback on the plans is now being sought, with final decisions expected later this year.
