Middle Corridor Revamp: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan & Georgia Unify for Trade Route Transformation
By Alpaslan Duven /London
In a strategic move to enhance the appeal of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR)—widely known as the Middle Corridor—Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Georgia are deepening trilateral cooperation to modernize infrastructure, unify tariffs, and digitize cross-border logistics.
Highlights of the Overhaul:
-
One Tariff, Three Borders:
Rail operators—Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ), Azerbaijan Railways (ADY), and Georgian Railway (GR)—are implementing a unified tariff model, aimed at delivering stable, transparent pricing across the corridor. The goal: make the Middle Corridor a serious alternative to northern freight routes. -
Seamless Border Flow:
New digital customs tools and shared cargo data systems are being rolled out to accelerate clearance times. Joint customs task forces are now coordinating inspections and streamlining transit documentation, especially for container traffic. -
Port-to-Rail Precision:
Key logistics hubs—Aktau, Baku, Poti, and Batumi—are undergoing upgrades to handle faster cargo throughput. A focus on synchronized block trains is helping reduce dwell times across intermodal segments, especially at ferry-rail junctures.
As global supply chains recalibrate, the Middle Corridor is emerging as a key geostrategic transit route—offering a faster, more resilient link between Europe and Asia.
