UK and EU close to Gibraltar border deal post-Brexit
UK and EU Close to Gibraltar Border Deal Post-Brexit
Foreign Secretary David Lammy is in Brussels for key talks with the EU and Spain as negotiations over a post-Brexit agreement on Gibraltar near a conclusion. The talks aim to secure a stable, long-term arrangement governing the border between Gibraltar and Spain, unresolved since the UK left the EU in 2020.
Prior to his Brussels visit, Lammy met with Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, local leaders, and business representatives. The UK insists that any deal must have Gibraltar’s full support and protect British sovereignty.
Chief Minister Picardo called for a “lasting, stable relationship” with the EU and Spain that is “safe, secure and beneficial.” Gibraltar, a British territory since 1713, strongly rejects any sovereignty-sharing with Spain, with 99% voting against it in a 2002 referendum.
The UK reaffirms its commitment to Gibraltar’s status and military presence, including its naval base and RAF station. Talks continue, with hopes of finalising an agreement soon.
