Air India Plane Crashes Near Mumbai: Dozens Feared Dead

June 12, 2025 | Mumbai, India — A passenger aircraft operated by Air India crashed near the outskirts of Mumbai on Wednesday morning, resulting in a tragic loss of life. Preliminary reports indicate that at least 46 people are feared dead, with several others critically injured.

The aircraft, identified as Flight AI472, was en route from Delhi to Mumbai when it reportedly lost contact with air traffic control during its final approach. Witnesses near the crash site in the Navi Mumbai region reported hearing a loud explosion followed by plumes of thick black smoke rising from a hilly area.

Emergency response teams, including fire services, police, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were quickly dispatched to the scene. Rescue operations are ongoing.

An Air India spokesperson confirmed the crash and expressed deep sorrow over the incident. “Our thoughts are with the families of those affected. We are doing everything possible to assist them during this difficult time,” the airline said in a brief statement.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. While weather conditions were reported to be normal, some aviation experts suggest mechanical failure or pilot error could be factors, though nothing has been confirmed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences via social media, stating, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the Air India crash. Prayers for the families. The government is monitoring the situation closely.”

The flight was carrying 113 passengers and 7 crew members. Hospitals in the region have been put on high alert to accommodate incoming casualties. Officials are working to identify the deceased and notify next of kin.

This incident marks one of the worst aviation disasters in India in recent years. Air India has suspended all operations of similar aircraft pending further investigation.

More details are expected as the investigation progresses.
