Ethiopia launches mega-airport project to redefine African Aviation

Bishoftu to Host Africa’s New Aviation Powerhouse

Bishoftu, Ethiopia  — Ethiopia is taking a bold leap into the future of aviation with the construction of a new mega-airport near Bishoftu, a city located just 39 kilometers southeast of the capital Addis Ababa. This ambitious infrastructure project, backed by the Ethiopian government and Ethiopian Airlines, is set to become one of the largest and most technologically advanced airports in Africa.

Designed to meet the country’s rapidly growing demand for air travel and cargo logistics, the new airport will feature:

  • Multiple runways capable of handling increased air traffic, reducing congestion and improving efficiency.

  • A state-of-the-art passenger terminal built to accommodate tens of millions of travelers annually.

  • Advanced cargo handling facilities, reflecting Ethiopia’s strategic vision to become a leading logistics hub in Africa.

  • Next-generation security and processing systems, ensuring smooth, safe, and seamless travel experiences.

The mega-airport project is a key part of Ethiopia’s broader national strategy to modernize infrastructure, drive foreign investment, and expand its influence in global trade and aviation. With Ethiopian Airlines already recognized as Africa’s most successful carrier, this new hub is poised to solidify the nation’s role as a central gateway between Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

“Ethiopia is not just building an airport; we are building a future,” said a spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia (@MFAEthiopia). “This project embodies our commitment to innovation, connectivity, and economic transformation.”

The site selection near Bishoftu takes advantage of flat terrain and accessibility to Addis Ababa, while also alleviating congestion at the existing Bole International Airport. Construction is expected to unfold in multiple phases, with significant international interest in investment and collaboration.

As the continent eyes greater integration through initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Ethiopia’s new mega-airport positions the nation at the forefront of regional mobility and economic diplomacy.
