WEF Founder Klaus Schwab under internal investigation

Geneva / Davos – An internal probe by the World Economic Forum (WEF) has concluded that founder Klaus Schwab engaged in a pattern of workplace misconduct and unauthorized spending over several years, according to the WSJ.

Key Findings from the Internal Report

Inappropriate workplace conduct: The investigation cites numerous instances of bullying and inappropriate behavior towards employees, with several reports mentioning unwelcome messages and communications.

Unauthorized personal spending: Schwab and his wife, Hilde, reportedly submitted over US $1.1 million in travel and personal expenses. This included luxury trips—such as to Venice, Miami, Seychelles, and Morocco—some with scant evidence of business justification.

Gifts and perks on corporate tab: The report alleges that the couple charged lavish gifts and hotel spa services to WEF corporate cards or through junior staff. Investigators noted at least 14 wellness charges, although Schwab claims he later reimbursed about half of that amount.

Culture of fear and favoritism: According to interviews with over 50 current and former employees, Schwab fostered an environment that sidelined older or pregnant women and discouraged open dialogue. Some described his leadership as authoritarian— likening the organization to his personal “fiefdom.”

Response from Schwab and WEF

Schwab has strongly denied all misconduct allegations, claiming any errors were unintentional and promising to repay any funds that were inappropriately billed. He maintains that he and his wife never exploited the forum for personal enrichment.

In April, Schwab filed a criminal defamation complaint in Geneva against the anonymous whistleblowers who triggered the probe.

A Swiss law firm, identified as Homburger, is expected to complete its investigation by the end of August. The findings will then be submitted to the WEF board and may be referred to Swiss prosecutors.
