Türkiye”s strategic position in the Middle East has been bolstered by its growing military presence and diplomatic engagements. The country has expanded its influence in regions such as Syria, Iraq, and Libya, positioning itself as a key player in Middle Eastern geopolitics.
Turkey’s recent agreements with the United States signify a strategic realignment in the Middle East. By enhancing nuclear energy cooperation and strengthening defense ties, Turkey is positioning itself as a central actor in regional and global affairs, akin to America’s role in the Western world.
Türkiye and the US signed a strategic civil nuclear cooperation
On September 25, 2025, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited the White House, marking a significant shift in U.S.-Türkiye relations. During this visit, Turkey and the United States signed a strategic civil nuclear cooperation agreement, signaling a new era of partnership between the two nations.
A Strategic Nuclear Partnership
The memorandum of understanding on nuclear cooperation aims to enhance collaboration in civilian nuclear technology, investment, and energy security. This agreement reflects Turkey’s ambition to diversify its energy sources and expand its role in the global clean energy transition.

Strengthening Defense Ties
In addition to the nuclear agreement, discussions between Erdoğan and President Donald Trump focused on defense cooperation. The U.S. is considering lifting the ban on F-35 fighter jet sales to Turkey, imposed due to Türkiye’s acquisition of the Russian S-400 missile defense system in 2019. This potential reversal underscores the growing alignment between the two countries.
