Israel intercepts Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla

Israel Intercepts Gaza-Bound Global Sumud Flotilla, Detains Greta Thunberg

By Alpaslan Düven-London

Israeli naval forces have intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy of humanitarian aid ships bound for Gaza, detaining dozens of activists including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.

The flotilla, comprising around 50 vessels carrying aid and international activists, set sail with the stated goal of breaking Israel’s long-standing naval blockade of Gaza. Organizers argued the mission was humanitarian in nature and protected under international law.

Israeli Forces Board Vessels

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that naval units approached the flotilla in international waters and ordered it to divert to Ashdod port, where cargo would be subjected to security checks before being transferred to Gaza.
“When the flotilla refused to change course, our forces boarded several vessels peacefully,” the ministry said in a statement. “All detainees are safe and will be processed according to Israeli law before deportation.”

Activists released video recordings showing heated exchanges with Israeli officers. Steering committee member Thiago Ávila accused Israel of committing war crimes in Gaza and said the flotilla would not recognize Israel’s authority to control humanitarian aid.

Global Reaction

The interception has sparked immediate condemnation. UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese and Colombian President Gustavo Petro both demanded that the flotilla be allowed safe passage. Human rights groups warned that blocking humanitarian convoys could constitute a breach of international law.
Greta Thunberg, who joined the mission to highlight Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, was reportedly detained without incident. Israeli officials have stated she will be deported alongside other foreign nationals.

Background

Israel has enforced a naval blockade on Gaza since 2007, citing security concerns and the need to prevent weapons smuggling. Critics, however, say the blockade has deepened the humanitarian crisis in the enclave.

This is not the first time international flotillas have been intercepted. In 2015, Israeli commandos boarded the Swedish-flagged Marianne of Gothenburg during Freedom Flotilla III, detaining its crew before deportation.

What’s Next

Attention now turns to the treatment of the detained activists, international diplomatic fallout, and whether the remaining flotilla vessels will attempt to continue their journey to Gaza.
