German Magazine Stern criticizes Trump, suggests Nobel Peace Prize could “tame” him

Berlin — The German news magazine Stern has sharply criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump, describing him as “corrupt” and “vengeful,” yet paradoxically suggesting that awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize might have a pacifying effect.

In an opinion piece, Stern argued that while it would be “absurd” to honor Trump with the Nobel Peace Prize, such an act of “ultimate flattery” could potentially lead to positive outcomes.

“He is corrupt, he has a criminal record, he is vengeful,” the article stated. “He led the United States — and ultimately the world — into ever-deeper trench warfare, even if he did not officially start a war.”

The magazine questioned whether Trump’s much-touted diplomatic achievements, including various peace agreements, truly amounted to lasting peace.

Despite that skepticism, the author floated the idea that giving Trump the Nobel Prize might appeal to his vanity in a way that encourages better behavior.

“Trump would, of course, be overjoyed to call himself a Nobel Peace Prize laureate — no one would think he deserved it more than he does himself,” Stern wrote. “And who knows — perhaps the fulfillment of his heart’s desire would have something positive.”

The piece ends on a resigned note, lamenting that such a gesture might further erode the moral standing of the Nobel Peace Prize but suggesting that, in an era of polarized politics, “it might not matter anymore.”
