Turkey: A Bridge of Humanity and Journalism in Times of Reconstruction
During an unforgettable week, Turkey became the meeting point of hope, reconstruction, and global journalistic commitment. As an invited representative at the Global Media Workshop and the Global Success Awards 2025, organized by the Global Journalism Council (GJC), I had the honor of taking part in an experience that transcended the professional realm to become a true human journey.
A Journey Through History and Resilience
The program began in Istanbul, a city where East and West merge into a single vision. From there, we traveled to Hatay, one of the regions most affected by the devastating earthquake of February 6, 2023, which claimed more than 50,000 lives. It was impossible not to be moved while walking through areas that still bear the scars of destruction, yet where a distinctly Turkish spirit flourishes — one of reconstruction and faith in the future.

In Hatay, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, and Adıyaman, we witnessed firsthand the monumental efforts of the Turkish government to rebuild cities, construct homes, schools, and hospitals, and restore dignity to those who lost everything. At every step, solidarity was alive. We met families who, despite their pain, offered us tea, smiles, and stories filled with hope.
The Strength of a Country That Refuses to Give Up
One of the most significant moments was our meeting with Murat Kurum, Turkey’s Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, who explained in detail the national reconstruction plan. His presentation was not just technical; it was a testament to leadership and political commitment to the people. Every word reflected the Turkish State’s determination to rise from tragedy with vision, organization, and respect for the memory of the victims.

As a journalist, it was a privilege to witness how a country turns catastrophe into an opportunity for unity and learning. Turkey does not lament — it rebuilds, and does so with a profound sense of identity and pride that moves the heart.
Global Media Gathering: The Power of United Voices
The final days of the trip took place in Antalya and Alanya, where the 5th Global Media Meeting and the Global Success Awards Ceremony were held. There, journalists from various countries participated in panels, conferences, and exchanges about the role of journalism in a constantly changing world.

The atmosphere was one of camaraderie and respect. Discussions focused on ethics, the social responsibility of the media, and the importance of reporting with truth and empathy. These spaces prove that when journalism is practiced with vocation, it can build bridges between cultures and serve as a tool for peace and reconstruction.
Gratitude and Commitment
I am deeply grateful to the Government of the Republic of Turkey for its warmth, hospitality, and openness toward foreign journalists. In every city, in every institution, and in every gesture, one could feel the pride of a nation that embraces the world and sees communication as a tool to build the future.

My sincere appreciation also goes to the Global Journalism Council, and especially to its president Mehmet Ali Dim, for his visionary leadership and for promoting these encounters that strengthen international ties among media professionals. I also extend thanks to the Council’s team, whose dedication and kindness accompanied us in every detail of the journey, making us feel at home even while far away. Their commitment, along with the impeccable work of the entire Council staff, left an indelible mark on each of us.
A Final Reflection
I return with my heart full of gratitude and admiration. Turkey not only showed us its wounds but also its immense capacity to heal. This journey reminded me why I chose journalism: to tell stories that matter, that inspire, that connect.
In times of disinformation and global crisis, this encounter was a declaration of faith in the power of dialogue, truth, and humanity.
Because when journalism is done with empathy, it can — like Turkey — rebuild what once seemed lost.
