Former Reform UK leader in Wales Nathan Gill has been sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison after admitting that he took substantial cash payments in exchange for delivering pro-Russian statements to the media and during his time in the European Parliament.

Delivering the sentence at London’s Old Bailey, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb said Gill had “abused a position of significant authority and trust” and acted out of “both financial and political gain.” She noted that an elected representative using their office to secretly advance the agenda of a foreign state strikes at the foundations of democratic accountability.

Gill, 52, from Anglesey in North Wales, had earlier pleaded guilty to eight counts of bribery. The offences were committed between 6 December 2018 and 18 July 2019, which coincided with his tenure as a Member of the European Parliament. Prosecutors said he accepted tens of thousands of pounds in cash to issue remarks aligned with Russian interests, including comments intended to influence public opinion and European political debate at a sensitive geopolitical moment.

The case has triggered renewed concerns about foreign influence campaigns, the integrity of political institutions, and the susceptibility of public officials to covert financial inducements. Observers note that Gill’s conviction adds to a growing body of evidence that European democracies remain targeted by efforts to manipulate narratives, secure sympathetic voices within influential forums, and covertly shape political outcomes.
