Germany Proposes “Two-Speed” European Union

Germany has proposed a “two-speed Europe” model within the European Union, allowing some member states to cooperate more deeply and move faster on key issues. The initiative aims to accelerate decision-making in areas such as economic integration, defense cooperation, and eurozone reforms.

The proposal, led by Germany and France, would enable a core group of countries to take action without waiting for approval from all 27 EU members. Other countries could join later, creating a flexible structure within the Union.

German officials emphasize that current EU decision-making processes are often slow, and Europe needs to act quickly amid geopolitical uncertainties. However, some smaller member states have expressed concern that a two-speed EU could create divisions within the bloc.

Analysts say the model could strengthen the EU’s global competitiveness but may also risk internal hierarchy and separation. Germany and France plan to discuss the proposal further with other EU members in the coming months.
