Belgian Anti-Corruption Police Search European Commission Offices
Brussels — Belgian anti-corruption investigators have carried out searches at several European Commission premises in Brussels as part of an investigation into the 2024 sale of 23 EU-owned buildings valued at approximately €900 million.
The searches were conducted at offices linked to the Commission’s administration and budget services. Belgian authorities are working in coordination with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), which is responsible for investigating crimes affecting the European Union’s financial interests.
The inquiry centres on the sale of the properties to Belgium’s sovereign wealth fund, the Federal Participation and Investment Company (SFPIM). The transaction formed part of a broader strategy by the Commission to reduce and modernise its office footprint in Brussels following changes in working patterns after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Questions have reportedly been raised about how the tender process was conducted, including concerns about competition and valuation. Investigators are examining whether procurement rules were fully respected and whether there were any irregularities in the handling of the sale.
The deal was concluded during the tenure of Johannes Hahn, who served as European Commissioner for Budget and Administration from 2019 to 2024. While no formal charges have been announced and no individuals have been publicly accused of wrongdoing, the investigation is understood to focus on decisions taken during that period.
In a brief statement, the European Commission said it is cooperating fully with the authorities and stressed that the property transaction was carried out in accordance with established procedures. Belgian prosecutors have not disclosed further details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The development marks a significant moment for EU institutions, as scrutiny intensifies over governance, transparency and financial management within the bloc’s administration. Investigators have not indicated when the probe is expected to conclude.
