Josep Borrell has sharply criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen,

Former EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has sharply criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, accusing her of aligning too closely with the United States and Israel while Europe bears the consequences.

In comments to Politico, Borrell said the European Union has failed to take meaningful action to “defend international law” following the launch of operations against Iran by the U.S. and Israel.

He argued that von der Leyen is “incapable of standing up to Washington” and displays a systematic bias in favor of the U.S. and Israel. According to Borrell, this stance has come at a cost for Europe, particularly in the form of rising energy prices.

Borrell also referenced remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has said such developments benefit the United States as an oil-exporting country.

The former EU diplomat further warned that Brussels risks losing credibility by applying international norms selectively.
