Jet Fuel Shortages Disrupt Flights Across the UK and Italy

Airlines in the United Kingdom are warning of potential jet fuel shortages and flight cancellations as existing fuel reserves—estimated to cover roughly six weeks—begin to run critically low. The situation has raised concerns across the aviation sector, with carriers preparing for operational disruptions if supply constraints persist.

Meanwhile, in Italy, significant restrictions on aviation fuel distribution have already been implemented at several major airports, including Bologna, Milan Linate, Venice, and Treviso. Air Bp Italia has issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) outlining a rationing system that will remain in effect until April 9.

Under these emergency measures, priority access to fuel will be granted to essential flights, including medical and emergency services, government operations, and long-haul routes exceeding three hours in duration. Airlines operating short-haul routes are expected to face the most severe impact, with reduced flight frequencies, delays, and potential cancellations.

Industry observers warn that the combined pressures of supply chain disruptions and rising demand could further strain fuel availability across Europe. Passengers are advised to check flight statuses in advance and prepare for possible last-minute changes as airlines adjust schedules to cope with the evolving situation.

The developments highlight growing vulnerabilities in aviation fuel logistics, raising broader concerns about energy resilience within the European transport network.
