Dozens of U.S. Lawmakers call for Trump to be removed under the 25th Amendment
A growing number of members of the U.S. Congress have called for former President Donald Trump to be removed from office through the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution, according to statements circulating on social media and political commentary accounts.
The lawmakers urging action include several prominent Democrats such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, and Senator Bernie Sanders, along with Senator Ed Markey. The list also includes numerous Democratic representatives from across the country.
Among those named are Ro Khanna, Eric Swalwell, Pramila Jayapal, Mark Pocan, Summer Lee, Sara Jacobs, Jimmy Gomez, Dan Goldman, Maxwell Frost, and Betty McCollum, among many others.
The 25th Amendment provides a constitutional mechanism allowing the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to declare a president unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office, potentially transferring authority to the vice president.
Calls invoking the amendment have periodically surfaced during times of political crisis or concerns over presidential fitness for office. However, the amendment has historically been used primarily to manage temporary transfers of power, such as during medical procedures.
It remains unclear whether the calls from lawmakers will translate into any formal constitutional process, as the mechanism requires action from the vice president and Cabinet rather than Congress alone.
