Hungary’s long-serving Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat to opposition leader Péter Magyar, marking a dramatic political shift in Hungary.
In a brief statement following the election results, Orbán acknowledged the outcome and congratulated Magyar, signaling the end of more than a decade of dominant rule by Orbán and his party, Fidesz. Early results indicate that Magyar’s reform-focused movement secured enough support to challenge the long-standing government.
Magyar, a former insider who turned into one of Orbán’s fiercest critics, has campaigned on promises to restore democratic checks and balances, strengthen relations with the European Union, and address corruption concerns that have dominated Hungarian politics in recent years.
Crowds gathered in the capital, Budapest, as supporters celebrated what many are calling a historic turning point for the country’s political landscape.
More details are expected as official results continue to come in and transition discussions begin.
