BBC plans major job cuts in cost-saving drive

The BBC is preparing to cut up to 2,000 jobs as part of a major restructuring plan aimed at reducing costs and reshaping the organisation for the digital era.

The move, described as the broadcaster’s largest downsizing in around 15 years, could affect roughly one in ten rolesacross the organisation. BBC leadership said the reductions form part of a wider plan to lower spending by about 10% over the next three years, targeting significant savings.

Executives say the changes are necessary as the media industry faces rapid transformation, with audiences increasingly moving to online platforms and global streaming services. Rising production costs and pressure on traditional funding sources have also added to the financial strain.

The BBC says it must modernise and operate more efficiently to remain competitive while continuing to deliver public service journalism and programming.

However, unions and critics have raised concerns that large-scale job losses could impact the broadcaster’s ability to maintain the breadth and quality of its news and content output.

Further details about which departments may be affected are expected as the restructuring process develops.
