WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico are being barred from the White House, escalating his long-running confrontation with news organizations critical of his administration.

In a post on his social media platform, Trump said the ban was “effective immediately” and accused the three outlets of repeatedly publishing what he described as “fake news,” “fiction” and “lies” about his presidency, administration and the United States. He also suggested that other media organizations could face similar restrictions.

Trump separately accused Politico of receiving an $8 million government subscription during former President Joe Biden’s administration, describing the arrangement as “corruption.” The president did not provide evidence in his post to substantiate that allegation.

The announcement immediately raised questions about how the administration intends to implement the ban, including whether it would affect White House press credentials, access to presidential events or participation in the White House press pool. As of the latest reports, the White House had not issued detailed formal guidance outlining the scope of the restrictions.

The move also places renewed attention on the constitutional protections afforded to the press under the First Amendment. Bloomberg Government reported that the decision strikes at fundamental protections for news media, while other reporting noted that the administration’s latest action could face legal and constitutional scrutiny.

The announcement follows previous disputes between the Trump administration and news organizations over access to presidential events. In 2025, the Associated Press was excluded from certain White House and presidential events after the administration objected to the news agency’s terminology concerning the Gulf of Mexico. The AP subsequently challenged the restrictions in court.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico have not been reported as having immediately responded to Trump’s latest announcement.

The White House restrictions could become the subject of further legal and political scrutiny as the administration clarifies how the ban will be enforced and whether additional news organizations will be excluded.
