Iran Embassy in London Rejects UK Allegations of Antisemitism and Criticises Government Stance
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in London has issued a statement strongly rejecting what it described as “baseless allegations of antisemitism” made by unnamed United Kingdom officials.
In its statement, the embassy said Iran “categorically rejects all forms of antisemitism,” adding that the country’s policies are guided by Islamic principles and a longstanding cultural heritage. It highlighted Iran’s Jewish community, which it said is one of the oldest in the world and continues to live with “full recognition and protection” of religious and cultural rights.
The embassy argued that criticism of Israeli government policies, including accusations of violations of international law, should not be conflated with antisemitism. It also referenced ongoing regional tensions, stating that Iranian civilians, including members of the Jewish community, have been affected by sanctions and military conflict involving the United States and Israel.
The statement further claimed that a synagogue in Tehran, identified as the Rafi’-Nia synagogue, was destroyed during what it described as a “criminal war of aggression” by American and Israeli forces. These claims have not been independently verified.
Calling for caution in attributing responsibility for sensitive incidents, the embassy urged UK authorities to avoid what it described as politically motivated conclusions and to handle such matters in a “fair and professional manner.” It also raised concerns about what it said were a lack of responses from the UK to Iranian requests for evidence in past allegations.
In addition, the embassy accused the UK of allowing individuals linked to groups it described as terrorist organisations to operate freely on British soil, alleging that this constituted a breach of international obligations related to counter-terrorism.
The statement concluded by urging British authorities to refrain from what it called unfounded accusations against Iran and to engage in more responsible handling of political and security-related issues.
The statement was issued by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in London on 5 May 2026.
