Seven injured in explosion at Swedish military training area in Sweden

STOCKHOLM, Sept. 17, 2026 — Seven people were injured after an explosion at a Swedish military training area in southwestern Sweden on Thursday, with several of those hurt reported to be in serious condition.

The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. local time at the Kråk military firing range near Karlsborg, in Västra Götaland County, according to the Swedish Armed Forces and local authorities. Emergency services, police and military personnel were dispatched to the site.

The Swedish Armed Forces said several people were taken to hospital, including with shrapnel-related injuries. The military said some of the injuries were serious and confirmed that the people involved were employees rather than conscripts. Relatives of those injured have been notified.

Hospital authorities told Swedish news agency TT that five of the seven injured were in serious condition, although their injuries were not considered life-threatening. Reports said those injured were men in their 20s and 30s.

Earlier reports described the incident as an explosion or deflagration during an exercise at the firing range. Swedish police said they were treating the incident as a workplace accident while authorities investigate what caused it.

The Swedish Armed Forces said its immediate priorities were providing crisis support and maintaining contact with the families of those affected.

The cause of the incident has not yet been established, and authorities have not indicated that the explosion was the result of an attack or deliberate act.
