José “Pepe” Mujica, former Uruguayan president, dies at 89

International report from Uruguay: José “Pepe” Mujica, former Uruguayan president, dies at 89

By Mariana Méndez Montevideo, Uruguay –

José Alberto Mujica Cordano, widely known as “Pepe” Mujica, passed away this Monday at the age of 89.

The news was confirmed by Uruguayan government officials this morning. The country is experiencing a moment of reflection and unease, as it loses not just a former president but a figure who shaped the national political landscape over the past few decades.

Mujica was an atypical figure in Latin American politics. A former member of the leftist Tupamaro guerrilla group, he spent nearly 15 years in prison during Uruguay’s military dictatorship. Released after the return of democracy in 1985, he entered institutional politics: first as a congressman, then senator, minister of agriculture, and eventually president in 2010, as part of the left-wing Broad Front coalition.

During his term (2010–2015), Mujica spearheaded laws that drew international attention, such as the regulation of cannabis, the legalization of same-sex marriage, and the decriminalization of abortion. At the same time, he faced criticism for not pushing deeper reforms, for maintaining ties with authoritarian regimes in the region, and for a leadership style often seen as too informal for the presidency.

While he was admired abroad for his critical stance on consumerism and his modest lifestyle—he famously lived on a small farm and drove a beat-up Volkswagen—opinions at home were more divided.

Some saw him as a symbol of authenticity and humility, while others regarded him as a charismatic yet inefficient leader.

In recent years, Mujica retired from active politics due to health reasons, though he remained a point of reference for many on the left. His words were still sought in moments of national crisis or political debate.

Today, Uruguay says goodbye to a major figure of its modern political history. Not an idealized leader for all, but undeniably someone who played a central role in shaping the country’s recent path.

Official statements regarding public tributes and funeral arrangements are expected later today
