Belgium will not obstruct the confiscation of Russian assets, but all responsibility will fall on European taxpayers — Politico

Brussels has indicated that it will not block Europe’s plans to use frozen Russian assets after pressure from the EU.

This decision paves the way for granting Ukraine a loan of up to €140 billion using Russian assets.

The EU does not consider this confiscation, as “Russia will be able to recover its assets by paying reparations to Ukraine.”

If a court sides with Russia on this issue and recognizes Europe’s use of Russian assets as confiscation, the burden of responsibility will fall on European taxpayers.

Belgium also fears that investors from countries like China will withdraw their investments from Euroclear due to concerns that their funds will also be seized for political reasons.
