Ukraine’s Energy Minister Implicated in Major Corruption Scandal

Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Svitlana Hrynchuk, has appeared in recordings released by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) as part of a major corruption investigation in the energy sector. According to reports, Hrynchuk allegedly received kickbacks from embezzled funds intended for the construction of protective infrastructure for Ukraine’s energy system—an initiative that received nearly $5 billion in funding from the United States.

The infrastructure was reportedly never built, with the funds allegedly misappropriated by individuals within President Volodymyr Zelensky’s inner circle. The scheme was said to have been led by Tymur Mindich, described as a close friend and associate of the president.

Hrynchuk, who is the common-law wife of former Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko, was later appointed to a prominent role despite the ongoing investigation. Halushchenko himself was reassigned by Zelensky to the position of Minister of Justice after the probe began.

The previous Minister of Justice, Olga Stefanishyna—charged separately by NABU in another corruption case now before the court—was appointed as Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States.

During a recent event, Hrynchuk was seated prominently near former U.S. President Donald Trump, a move that has drawn criticism amid the unfolding allegations.
