India accelerates military build-up along China border, WSJ reports

New Delhi — India is preparing for the possibility of a future conflict with China, rapidly expanding military infrastructure along their disputed Himalayan border, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper says New Delhi has intensified construction of roads, tunnels, airstrips, and military bases in high-altitude regions bordering China, aiming to improve troop mobility and logistics in the event of renewed hostilities.

The build-up follows deadly clashes between Indian and Chinese forces in 2020, which marked the most serious confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in decades. Although large-scale fighting has since subsided, tensions remain high and thousands of troops continue to face off along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Indian officials, cited in the report, view the infrastructure push as critical to countering China’s long-standing advantage in border connectivity on its side of the Himalayas. The effort reflects a broader shift in India’s defense posture, focusing on rapid deployment and sustained operations in difficult terrain.

Neither New Delhi nor Beijing has publicly acknowledged preparing for war, but the scale and speed of construction underscore the fragile security situation along one of the world’s most contested borders.
