Niger Imposes Indefinite Entry Ban on U.S. Citizens
Niam ey, Niger — Niger has announced an indefinite ban on the entry of all American citizens, halting the issuance of visas to U.S. passport holders with immediate effect, according to an official government statement.
Authorities said the decision “fully and definitively suspends the issuance of visas to all U.S. citizens” and bars their entry into the country without a specified end date. The move represents a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between Niamey and Washington.

The Nigerien government described the measure as an act of reciprocity, following a recent decision by the United States to designate Niger as non-eligible for U.S. visas under travel restrictions linked to former President Donald Trump’s expanded travel ban. That U.S. policy cited security and vetting concerns as justification for limiting entry from certain countries, including Niger.
While Niger did not outline specific exemptions, early indications suggest the ban applies broadly across all visa categories. It remains unclear whether diplomatic or emergency travel will be treated differently.
The decision comes amid already strained relations between the two countries, as well as ongoing security challenges in Niger. The U.S. State Department currently maintains a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for the country, citing terrorism, kidnapping, and political instability.
Neither the U.S. Department of State nor the Nigerien government has indicated when, or under what conditions, the restrictions might be lifted. Diplomats on both sides have yet to announce formal talks aimed at resolving the dispute.
