Bank of England Considers Replacing Churchill on £5 Note with Wildlife Images
The Bank of England is considering removing wartime leader Winston Churchill from the UK’s £5 banknote and replacing historical figures with images of wildlife.
The proposal was discussed by the bank’s wildlife advisory panel, where member Nadeem Perera described the move as “overdue,” arguing that the country’s natural heritage should be reflected on its currency.
Current UK banknotes feature prominent historical figures, including Winston Churchill, novelist Jane Austen, painter J. M. W. Turner, and mathematician Alan Turing.
Perera said the change would recognize the importance of the nation’s biodiversity. “The wildlife of the UK is not separate from our culture,” he said.
Under the plan, the Bank of England will invite members of the public to suggest which animals should appear on the new banknotes.
