BREAKING NEWS: 7.4-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Indonesia

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Indonesia, triggering a tsunami threat for parts of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred in the Molucca Sea region at a depth of approximately 35 kilometers, with the epicenter located about 127 km west-northwest of Ternate in North Maluku.

Seismic monitoring agencies say tsunami waves are possible following the powerful offshore quake, prompting authorities to closely monitor coastlines across the region. Emergency systems have issued alerts urging residents in low-lying coastal areas to remain vigilant and move away from beaches until further assessments are completed.

Initial reports indicate the quake was strongly felt across nearby Indonesian islands, though no immediate reports of casualties or major damage have been confirmed so far. Authorities are also warning that aftershocks may follow, which is common after earthquakes of this magnitude.

Indonesia sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” one of the world’s most seismically active zones, where tectonic plate movements frequently trigger earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Officials and tsunami monitoring centers are continuing to analyze the situation, and updates are expected as more seismic and ocean data becomes available.
