France and South Cyprus Expected to Sign Defence Agreement Allowing French Troop Deployment

NICOSIA, June 8 — France and the Republic of Cyprus are expected to sign a new defence cooperation agreement on Monday that will reportedly allow French military personnel to be stationed on the island’s southern part.

According to local media reports, the agreement is expected to be signed by French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin and Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas during an official visit to Nicosia.

The deal is expected to deepen military cooperation between France and the Republic of Cyprus, building on existing defence partnerships that have expanded in recent years. France has previously used Cypriot facilities for military exercises and regional operations in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The planned agreement comes amid growing geopolitical competition in the region, where energy exploration, maritime disputes, and security concerns have prompted several countries to strengthen their military presence and partnerships.

The development has drawn attention due to the island’s long-standing division. Cyprus has remained split since 1974, with the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus controlling the south and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) administering the north.

Officials and observers in Northern Cyprus have argued that decisions affecting the island’s security architecture should involve both sides. Critics of the agreement say the TRNC was not consulted and warn that increased foreign military involvement could complicate efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus issue.

Supporters of the agreement, meanwhile, contend that it enhances the Republic of Cyprus’s defence capabilities and contributes to regional security cooperation between European partners.

The expected accord reflects a broader trend of expanding defence ties between France and countries in the Eastern Mediterranean, where Paris has sought to strengthen its strategic presence through military partnerships and security agreements.
