Iraq, Iran sign 4 Cooperation Agreements during Pezeshkian’s visit to Baghdad

The agreements were signed during official talks between the two leaders, reflecting ongoing efforts by Baghdad and Tehran to strengthen economic and institutional ties.

The signed documents include:

• A road transport agreement to facilitate the cross-border movement of goods, improve trade logistics, and streamline freight transportation between Iraq and Iran.
• A memorandum of understanding on the Khosrowi–Khanqin–Baghdad railway project, which seeks to advance plans for a rail link connecting Iran’s Khosrowi border crossing with Khanqin in eastern Iraq and extending to Baghdad. The project is intended to improve passenger and cargo connectivity while enhancing regional transport corridors.
• A memorandum of understanding establishing Tehran and Baghdad as “twin cities,” paving the way for closer cooperation between the two capitals in areas such as urban planning, municipal services, cultural exchanges, tourism, and local governance.
• A memorandum of understanding on public administration, training, and human resources, aimed at strengthening cooperation between government institutions through the exchange of expertise, capacity-building programs, civil service training, and administrative reform initiatives.

The agreements were signed as part of President Pezeshkian’s official engagement with Iraqi leaders, underscoring the two neighboring countries’ efforts to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors despite broader regional and geopolitical challenges.

Iran and Iraq maintain close political and economic ties, with bilateral trade valued at several billion dollars annually. Both governments have expressed interest in expanding transport infrastructure and improving cross-border connectivity to boost trade, investment, and regional integration.
