The International Criminal Court prosecutor who requested the arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been dismissed,

The decision was taken during a special meeting of the ICC’s member states at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

According to reports, 82 of the court’s 125 member countries supported his removal, marking the first time an ICC chief prosecutor has been ousted through such a vote

Khan has consistently denied all allegations. His legal representatives have argued that the disciplinary proceedings were unfair and did not provide him with proper procedural protections.

A British barrister, Khan was elected as the ICC’s chief prosecutor in 2021 for a nine-year term. During his tenure, he oversaw investigations and prosecutions involving allegations of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

His removal brings an unprecedented chapter in the history of the International Criminal Court to a close and leaves the institution facing the task of appointing new leadership for its prosecution office.
