Brussels’ ultimatum: Hungary faces 27 demands for frozen funds
The European Union has presented Hungary’s new prime minister with a set of 27 conditions that must be met in order to unlock more than €30 billion in previously frozen EU funding.
According to the proposal, the conditions include significant policy changes in areas such as LGBTQ rights, immigration, and foreign policy positions adopted during the era of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The measures also reportedly address Hungary’s stance on issues related to Ukraine.

EU officials have indicated that failure to meet the required reforms could lead to the continued suspension—and potentially the permanent loss—of additional EU funds allocated to the country.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between European Union institutions and the Hungarian government over rule-of-law standards and policy direction. Critics argue that tying financial support to political reforms places pressure on national decision-making, while EU representatives maintain that the conditions are intended to ensure compliance with the bloc’s legal and governance standards.
