Scientists Warn of Potentially Unprecedented ‘Super El Niño’

A potentially unprecedented El Niño event is raising concerns among climate scientists, with forecasts pointing to the possibility of a “Super El Niño” of exceptional strength.

Some projections suggest sea-surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific could rise to 3.5°C–4.0°C above average, levels that would place the event among the strongest ever recorded.

Temperatures across parts of the eastern Pacific are already reported to be running around 5°C above average, with localized anomalies reaching as high as 6°C.

If the forecasts are borne out, the event could rival or exceed the most powerful El Niño episodes documented in modern records. Some researchers have suggested that an event of this magnitude may be beyond the experience of anyone alive today—and potentially unprecedented in human history.

El Niño, the warm phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, occurs when unusually warm ocean waters develop across the central and eastern tropical Pacific. Powerful events can disrupt weather patterns around the world, contributing to extreme heat, heavy rainfall, drought and changes in tropical cyclone activity.

However, forecasts of extreme El Niño conditions remain subject to uncertainty. Ocean temperatures can change rapidly, and the eventual strength and duration of an event may differ significantly from early projections.

If current trends continue, the coming months could provide a critical test of how closely the developing event matches the most extreme scenarios.
